How does therapy work?

Every therapist has their own unique way of providing therapy. My practice focuses on counseling, coaching, and psychotherapy to meet you where you’re at and provide personalize care.

You may find that during the course of treatment you move between receiving coaching, psychotherapy, or counseling. Or there may be times where all three show up. As a masters level professional and licensed therapist I have the knowledge and experience to support you at any part of your wellness journey

What’s the difference between coaching, counseling, and psychotherapy?

Depending on who you ask you may get different answers, and the line between these services is often blurred or overlapping. In my practice I break it up this way:

Coaching is a private service provided to help you reach wellness goals when you may have obstacles or blocks but no mental health symptoms or current situational/life stressors. It is not usually reimbursable by insurance but it is proactive self-care and can help you achieve optimal wellness and your personal or professional development goals.

Counseling is sometimes referred to as “non-medical” or situational support. It is also often not reimbursable as there is no qualifiable mental disorder or diagnosis. It is more private and more flexible than psychotherapy or coaching. It is often used to support healthy mental habits, working through acute or situational stressors, or to be proactive and preventative about your mental health so that symptoms do not worsen to the point of disorder or diagnosis. Some insurances to provide reimbursement or limited coverage of mental health counseling.

Psychotherapy is focused treatment for a mental disorder that meets medical criteria for diagnosis. It is usually reimbursable by insurance providers .

You want to feel whole, happy, and connected.

When life is overwhelming, or an unexpected tragedy occurs, things can feel pretty hopeless. It can hard to get motivated. It feels difficult to keep going. It seems impossible to get help. But now more than ever is when you need to take a step. Call a friend, do something kind for yourself, seek professional support from a mental health expert. Trust -even a little- that someone out there cares about you and can be there to support you through your pain. Trusting and supportive relationships can help you feel whole, happy, and connected. It starts with you.

Hi, I’m Katie, and I Can Help

Katie Lorz Counselor in Tacoma Specializing in Anxiety, Trauma, Relationship, and Empowerment Counseling

I know it’s scary to make the call. I’ve been there. I’ve met therapists I don’t connect with, felt like no one would understand, or been scared to admit I needed some help. I get how hard it can be to trust when it feels like no one cares.

I’m here to listen to you. To accept, support, and challenge you. You are safe in the “therapy bubble” to share yourself completely and trust that I will hold your confidence and accept you just as you are.

Together we will discover what you value, what has happened to you to mold who you are, what holds you back, and what helps you keep going. We will play with time tested tools and techniques to see which ones help you to heal, grow, connect, and make meaning of your life’s events.

You are safe and in control of your therapy treatment. You decide when, how often, and how long you come to therapy. I provide my professional recommendations for your care.
